Hoyt Q. Bailey was honored on October 22 at a reception at Cleveland Community College in celebration of being named Chairman Emeritus of the CCC Board of Trustees. The Board unanimously voted to bestow the title on Bailey at their September 2, 2014, meeting.
According to CCC President, Dr. L. Steve Thornburg, “Hoyt Bailey served with distinction for 15 years as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I valued his guidance and wisdom but most of all, his friendship. He is a proud supporter of the College which is evidenced by not only his service but his many monetary gifts. His dedication to education in Cleveland County is unmatched.”
Bailey was originally appointed to the CCC Board of Trustees by the Cleveland County Board of Education in 1987. In September of 1999, he was first elected as Chairman of the Board and was re-elected every year thereafter. During his tenure as Chairman, the College’s enrollment more than doubled and the physical size of the campus grew as well. As Chairman, Bailey oversaw the renovation of the Wright Complex and the construction of the Allied Health and Science Center named in memory of his wife, Anne, and in honor of Bailey. Bailey was also instrumental in forming the collaborative partnership with Cleveland County, the Cleveland County Board of Education, and the Cleveland Community College Foundation for the construction of the LeGrand Center.
Ellis Monroe, who has served on the Board for the past 14 years and was elected as Chairman in September commented, “Hoyt has been a great friend for many, many years. I was privileged to be on the Board for almost all of the years he served as Chair. I am humbled to be following him and only hope that I can lead half as well as he did.”
According to Bailey, “I love the College and have been honored to be a member of the Board of Trustees for more than 27 years. My 15 years as Chairman have been so rewarding. I have witnessed the evolution of the College from a small technical school to a nationally-recognized comprehensive community college. I am truly honored to have served as Chairman of the Board and enormously flattered to have been named Chairman Emeritus by my fellow board members.”
Thornburg added, “Because of Hoyt Bailey’s leadership of our Board and involved membership as a Trustee, Cleveland Community College is a stronger, better institution providing much needed workforce development and higher education opportunities for our community.”
Bailey will continue to serve on the Board of Trustees. His current term expires in 2016.
